《英雄曲》似一首長篇史詩，分「出征」、「戰鬥」和「復員」三部，各部包含十幾首詩串聯而成，雖然故事連貫性較淡薄，但詩人的抒情味較濃，是很特殊的史詩寫法。其中「出征」諸詩在型塑英雄的形象及性格，「戰鬥」諸詩描述種種戰鬥情況和遭遇，「復員」諸詩處理戰後英雄恢復日常生活，由絢爛歸於平淡的生活樣貌。
