漫漫歷史長河裡，平凡小人物能如何因應大時代的風雲開闔？
在宋代道學與政治糾葛變化最激越的孝宗、光宗、寧宗三朝，中下階層官員孫應時（1154-1206）躬逢學術蓬勃發展而成為道學追隨者，日後又因道學領袖捲入朝廷政治鬥爭而遭受波及，身陷慶元黨禁陰霾。本書藉由譜寫孫應時的生命故事，描繪南宋中期道學追隨者如何利用自身宦歷政務經驗與人際關係等社會資本，因應政治變局。旨在探討人際資本在宋代中低階層士人宦途中所扮演的角色，以及政治權勢與人際情誼如何在政局變動中交互影響。孫應時及其師友的生涯起落，也體現出政局激越動盪下，道學追隨者在為學與從政之間權衡取捨所承受的壓力與相應抉擇，並呈現出朱、陸學術競合與道學群體社會網絡多樣而複雜的面貌。

黃寬重
臺灣宜蘭人。現任長庚大學醫學系講座教授、長庚醫院研究員，中央研究院歷史語言研究所兼任研究員。少時有志於社會改革，且感於體制改造有賴社會文化的潛移默化，遂投身學術研究。長年耕耘歷史學，致力推動人文學跨領域整合；近年關注士人群體的多元性，及其在政治社會中扮演的不同角色。著有《南宋地方武力──地方軍與民間自衛武力的探討》、《宋代家族與社會》、《政策．對策──宋代政治史探索》。習史四十餘年，眷戀南宋；樂在史料中拾掇新議題，興味盎然，不知老之將至。
