原书出版于1843年，当时的英国上下都对刚刚跟自己打了一仗的帝国充满了好奇，于是出版商请来两位作者，出版了这本图文并茂地介绍中国的山水风光和习俗民情的画册。这本画册多次再版，还被翻译成了不同的欧洲语言，在其他国家出版。 这本图册难能可贵之处就在于，在摄影术尚未发明的时代，以表现力极为细腻的钢版雕版画的形式，保存了反映晚清中国山水风貌和习俗民情的图卷。
