1643年西敏會議於英國召開，1646年十二月完成了西敏信條，供日後議院及議會之用；其在英、美長老會及北美的公理會與浸信會中是最具影響力的信條。此信條共有三十三章，其特色：（1）內容完整、精確、整潔、平衡、聖經根據強、對爭論的問題提供溫和而明確的決議。（2）文中論述的次序為啟示論、神論、人論、基督論、救贖論，教會論、及末世論，成為現代教義神學分段的先驅。（3）而其第一章「聖經論」即被譽為基督教中最完美的聖經論告白。
