堪察加是太平洋火鏈中，火山活動最活躍的地區，境內有300 多座火山，其中有29 座活火山，以及各式各樣的火山地形，包括冒煙的火山口、錐狀的火山體、翡翠色的火山口湖、間歇泉、火山熔岩、溫泉…… 等等。除了火山地形之外，山區還有冰川地形，山坡終年掛著冰雪，也有大片的原始林、大小湖泊及蜿蜒的河川，是鮭魚的故鄉。此外，堪察加還有若干不同種族的少數民族，還保持著相當程度的傳統文化。另外，野生動物數量也是很多，如棕熊以及種類繁多的鳥類，所以堪察加是愛好大自然探險家的天堂。
