英國左派媒體文化研究先驅雷蒙?威廉斯(Raymond Williams)嘗對電視等現代傳媒科技促進民主參與和文化革命的潛力充滿期待，但是也揭示了傳媒是有可能在資本勢力與國家機器的共謀之下，成為反動工具。過去二十年來，台灣傳媒在政治社會體系的劇烈變化、市場力量的猛然勃興，以及後冷戰全球結構中的邊緣處境作用下，呈現出詭譎複雜的變化樣貌；而其造成的反動力量，竟越發有如威廉斯之先見。本書稟承台灣社會研究季刊(台社)二十年來的批判學術宗旨，從《台灣社會研究季刊》以及國內其他傳播學術刊物中收錄十九篇長短論文，分就傳媒學術變遷、資本、勞動、政策與文本批評等面向，希冀提供讀者瞭解傳媒之鑰，並進而增培改革傳媒之力。
